More than 2000 characters analysed

In an attempt to find the answer, students in computer science at the Technical University of Munich have developed an algorithm to calculate the survival chances of each character according to specific criteria. After collecting data on some 2,000 characters from the novels and the HBO series, they analysed several factors: is the character alive or dead? Which family are they from? Are they married or single? What gender are they? Who are their potential lovers? What are their titles and allegiances?

“We wanted to determine which characteristics the characters who are already dead have, and use them to establish the death percentage probability for those who are still alive”, explained Guy Yachdav, who led this project, the results are which are posted on a dedicated website. After analysing all this data, the algorithm delivered the verdict.

And those who have the best chance of dying in the final season are: the mercenary Bronn (94% chance of death), followed by The Mountain (80%), Sansa Stark (73%), Bran Stark (58%) and Sandor Clegane, often called "the Hound" (48%).

... and the survivors

As for the possible survivors, the list is as follows: Daenerys has the best chance of getting out alive (99% chance of survival), followed by the fine strategist Tyrion Lannister (97%) and his friend Varys ( 97%), followed by Samwell Tarly (97%), Cersei and Jaime Lannister (95% and 96%). A little further down, the algorithm estimates the survival chances of Jon Snow at 88%, and those of Brienne de Torth at 87%, while poor Arya shows just a 53% chance of survival.

Will these predictions turn out to be correct? Find out the answer in a few weeks...
