A new Netflix documentary, The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann, will investigate some of the many theories that have been suggested regarding her disappearance and interview several key figures related to the investigation.
Directed by Chris Smith and executive produced by Emma Cooper, the documentary series is comprised of eight episodes and will combine archive footage with new interviews of 40 contributors linked to the case. The official summary of the show says: 'A couple's grief over their daughter's disappearance is compounded by a frenzied media and a detective's mistaken belief that they played a part.'
The McCanns speak out
Whilst it sounds as though the documentary will argue against the accusations against the McCanns, the couple declined to take part in the film and have slammed the programme in an official statement:
'The production company told us that they were making the documentary and asked us to participate.
We did not see - and still do not see - how this programme will help the search for Madeleine and, particularly given there is an active police investigation, it could potentially hinder it.
Consequently, our views and preferences are not reflected in the programme. We will not be making any further statements or giving interviews regarding this programme.'
The search continues
Scotland Yard is still searching for Madeleine, who would now be almost 16 years old, and last November they were granted an additional £150,000 from the Home Office - allowing them to continue their investigation until the end of March, taking the total amount spent on the inquiry around £11.75 million.
