In a statement, an ITV spokesperson said:
Richard was unwell in the early hours and was immediately seen by our on-site medical team. He's since been taken to hospital as a precaution, the health and safety of our campmates is our priority
Breaking the COVID bubble
However, due to strict coronavirus safety measures, having left the camp, even for an emergency, means that the celebrity broke the COVID bubble. As a result, Madeley was not allowed to go back to the castle for the safety of the rest of the cast members. An ITV insider explained:
Our strict Covid protocols means Richard has sadly had to leave the show as he is no longer in the bubble the celebrities from when entering the castle. He has been a truly brilliant campmate and we thank him for being part of this series.
A £200,000 pay-out
Madeley has since made a full recovery and took to social media to reassure his fans that he was 'absolutely fine.' In the post he made on his personal Instagram account, he wrote:
Obviously I'm gutted to be leaving so soon but the safety of all the campmates is the number one priority. I'm incredibly excited to watch their journey continue...even more so at the prospect of being somewhere a little warmer than Gwrych Castle.
And added:
Thank you to everyone who supported me on my brief but completely unforgettable adventure—I've made some great friends and honestly had the time of my life.
But alls well that ends well for Madeley as, reportedly, he will still be receiving his huge £200,000 pay-out for having participated in the show despite only having lasted four days.
