In search of Pokémon in their natural habitat
One game that often doesn't get brought up during the discussion of best Nintendo 64 releases with the likes of Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 is Pokémon Snap. Released in 1999, it's very different from the Pokémon games we are used to today.
In this game, you play as Todd Snap, a photographer who has been called on by Professor Oak to go on a safari and photograph as many different Pokémon as possible. Simple, right? Travelling on a rail, your goal is to take the best photos of as many different creatures as you can.
Little over 20 years after the release of this popular game, we didn’t think we’d ever hear about it again. But we didn’t take The Pokémon Company into account, the company that is partnered with Nintendo to manage the Pokémon brand all around the world. On June 17, the company gave a presentation during Pokémon Presents where they revealed their upcoming projects. Lasting just 11 minutes, this presentation was to mainly be devoted to the Expansion Passes for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, which have recently been causing a fuss as a result of a possible new, mysterious Pokémon…
But the highlight of the presentation had to be when they announced ‘New Pokémon Snap’, a remake of the 1999 game which will be released for Nintendo Switch. Like its predecessor, this upcoming game, which was developed by Bandai Namco, will allow you to explore various areas and locations, from jungles to beaches, to find and photograph Pokémon. The first clips we have from the game suggest the game will include creatures from across the different generations, which means a wide range of photos will be possible. In terms of when it will be released, you will have to be patient, but the ‘Coming Soon’ announcement from the presentation has us hoping it will be the end of the year…
