The incident occurred in an actual 'eye for an eye' match which specified that the fight would only be over once open of the contestant's eyes were extracted.
WWE hosted the extreme match during the Horror Show at Extreme Rules.
Rollins came in ready to roll in classic cinematic wrestling fashion by wielding a wrench, ready to pry out the eyes of his opponent Ray Mysterio.
However, no tools were needed for the extraction as in the end Rollins managed to pry out Mysterio's eye by jamming his socket onto the corner of the steps leading up to the ring.
Mysterio was then recorded hollering in pain and rolling around as doctors tended to the wounded fighter alongside his son Dominik. And, after presumably being totally disgusted at what he had achieved, Rollins threw up in a spectacularly dramatic fashion.
WWE stated that Mysterio had been rushed to hospital after the incident for a 'potential globe luxation'. The statement read:
Medical experts were optimistic that if the optic nerve is not severed and there is not too much strain on the blood vessels and nerves that connect the eye to the rest of the head, there's a chance Mysterio can maintain his vision.
It can only be assumed that the extreme match was intended to be just another extreme thematic stunt and nobody's eye actually came out. But, despite knowing this, fans weren't disappointed with the fakeness of the stunt but rather by the cinematic effort.
After both the Boneyard and Firefly Funhouse filmed in an empty stadium due to lockdown restrictions, WWE fanatics were hopeful for a rather extreme match but were instead greeted with a fake eye and minimal blood.
