The number of celebrity campmates in each series has varied in recent years, with just 11 campmates entering the jungle last year compared to 12 or 13 in each of the ten previous series. Whilst the number of contestants this year hasn’t yet been confirmed, it’s possible we could see another year of 11 campmates as producers opt to pay big money for massive stars.
Indeed, last year’s King of the Jungle, Harry Redknapp, accidentally let slip that former England footballer and Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright has signed up for the jungle after being offered a tidy £1 million fee – double the half a million that Harry was paid to appear on last year’s series.
Coronation Street star Andrew Whyment, who has played Kirk Sutherland on the cobbles for the past 19 years, has also been confirmed as a campmate for I’m A Celeb 2019, following in the footsteps of Corrie co-stars Jenny McAlpine (aka Fiz Brown) and Helen Flanagan (who played Rosie Webster) who have previously enjoyed success in the jungle.
An I’m A Celeb source told The Sun that the show’s producers ‘were chuffed to get Andrew as viewers have watched him on Coronation Street for the best part of two decades, yet know nothing about him away from Kirk. Soap stars always do well on I’m a Celeb . . . so the producers have high hopes of Andrew.’
The announcement of Andrew as a campmate takes the number of confirmed celebs up to eight! Check out the video above to see who else is heading into the jungle this year!
