Three players in particular: Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rushford and Jadon Sancho were subjected to vile racist abuse on social media after they missed their penalties, handing Italy a win.
The Duke of Cambridge who was in Wembley Stadium with Kate and their son George last night, has condemned the abuse describing it as 'abhorrent'.
He tweeted:
I am sickened by the racist abuse aimed at England players after last night’s match. It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrent behaviour. It must stop now and all those involved should be held accountable.
General Condemnation
The racist attacks on players from some of England’s fans on social media have been met with widespread condemnation from all quarters. There are calls for the perpetrators to be held accountable.
The Football Association condemned the vitriolic comments as ‘disgusting behaviour’. In a statement this morning, the FA said it:
strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled by the online racism that has been aimed at some of our England players on social media. We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behaviour is not welcome in following the team. We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson also took to Twitter Monday morning to condemn the attacks. He is also calling for the people behind the social media abuse to be brought to book.
This England team deserves to be lauded as heroes, not racially abused on social media. Those responsible for this appalling abuse should be ashamed of themselves.
The three players at whom the attacks were directed, missed their kicks during the penalty shootout which eventually resulted in England going down 2-3 in the showdown.
A win last night would have marked the team’s first major tournament victory since the success of the 1966 World Cup.
