Innocent until violent
Manchester United first stated that it does not condone violence of any kind, but Greenwood was subsequently suspended after cops initiated an investigation. Another statement confirmed,
Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police stated:
Police were made aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.
An investigation was launched and following enquiries, we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing.
Greenwood was taken into prison Friday night when police raided his residence in Bowdon, Greater Manchester. Following the allegations, crime scene investigation vans were seen parked outside the footballer's home yesterday. There were security workers who were reportedly provided by his club present at a second property he owns nearby. The workers confirmed that his parents were inside. After his arrest, Greenwood's potential domestic and international career is now in peril.
Dark future for the star
The emerging star has made quite an impression on the pitch this season. He scored five goals in the Premier League and one in the Champions League. He joined the team when he was six years old and worked his way through the levels to a regular berth on the first team.
When he debuted for United in the Champions League at the age of 17, he became the club's youngest player. Greenwood has totalled 129 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 35 goals. Greenwood was given his first cap by England boss Gareth Southgate in 2020 when he came off the bench in a 1-0 win against Iceland.
