McKamey Manor is a haunted house like no other. Not just a creepy houses with things that’ll jump out at you, this horror tour spans two US states – going from Summertown, Tennessee to Huntsville, Alabama – and could last up to ten hours.
Before starting the challenge, participants are obliged to read and sign a 40-page waiver, which stipulates that you may have to get a tattoo, pull out your own teeth or have your fingernails pulled out. According to McKamey tour volunteer Kris Smith, who has failed the challenge three times, there’s even ‘a chance of death.’
Wannabe contestants must also be at least 21 years of age (or 18 with parental permission), have a doctor’s note declaring them fit to take part and undergo drug testing to ensure that they’re not under the influence of any substances. There’s also a thorough background check and FaceTime interview. If you pass all this, the entry fee is a bag of dog food for one of owner Russ McKamey’s pet dogs.
Russ has spent over a million dollars on the set-up of his haunted horror tours but he insists he’s just an ordinary guy, saying: ‘I'm a very straight-laced conservative guy, but here I run this crazy haunted house that people think is this torture factory, fetish factory. All of these things that it's not, but people believe that based upon the films that I have made.’
