Cancer: a disease that kills 1 in 11 women
The least you can say about Ann Milne is that she's a courageous woman.
A few years after having had a mastectomy (total or partial removal of the breast), the mother was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer.
Devastated by the news, the woman made sure that she did not crumble because of it, and that she fought the disease like she had done before. Her goal was to live as long as possible so that she could spend that time with her family.
Like other patients, she underwent several sessions of chemotherapy over a period of six months. It is important to know that these treatments have serious long-term consequences. They have an impact on a person's body, but also on their morale.
The most common symptoms are hair loss, nausea, loss of balance, fatigue, skin rashes and memory loss.
A mistake she will pay dearly for
After bravely keeping up the pace, Ann Milne finally received the doctor's verdict. Had she beaten the disease? You could say so, yes...
In reality, the mother had never suffered from liver cancer. What the doctors did not see on her X-rays was that she had non-cancerous liver lesions.
It was a not-so-great announcement for Ann Milne. It must have felt like a tremendous blow to the head, and it is perfectly understandable why.
As explained earlier, the heavy treatments she'd undergone had caused irreversible physical and psychological damage. She confided to The Mirror:
It ruined my life (...) I was effectively sentenced to death.
It is true that mistakes are human, but when people's health is at stake, it is supremely important to be extremely vigilant. It was a nightmare for Ann Milne. Fortunately, she managed to surround herself with good people and get past it.
