Bridges, there are thousands of them throughout the world! Although many of them are pretty normal and are just used for traffic, some of them can be distinguished by their surprising shape or functionality, which is especially the case for this bridge in Uruguay. Let’s explain.

A new shape!
Rafael Viñoly, an architect from Uruguay, has built this completely novel bridge, in a circular shape. Located in the south of Uruguay, it was built in the heart of the Laguna Garzón (Garzón Lagoon) and connects the towns of Rocha and Maldonado.
An appropriate shape when you think about it:
‘The concept of the Puente Laguna Garzón was to transform a traditional vehicular crossing into an event that reduces the speed of the cars, to provide an opportunity to enjoy panoramic views of an amazing landscape…’ explains the architect.
A bridge accessible to everyone:
This bridge is also equipped with room for pedestrians who want to walk and admire the Lagoon. It is very similar to the Veluwemeer Aqueduct in the Netherlands, which stretches below sea level, but can also be used by pedestrians who wish to walk across it.
