Watch out for the wave
The Atlantic Ocean Road is a particularly dangerous section of the Norwegian road. At 8.3 km long, it has an open sea view and is hit by extremely strong sea winds. Also, it is not uncommon for the vehicles travelling along to get very close to the ocean and even have a flood submerge them.
Construction work began in 1983, but the inauguration was only held on 7 July, 1989. The road is built on several small islands and reefs and goes over several roadways and viaducts. If you go there you will get to see a beautiful show, provided you are a risk-taker and well prepared! It is even possible to walk a portion of the road on foot, although it is better to cover yourself well in this case.
In addition to defying the elements, this road achieved great recognition by being elected the ‘Norwegian Construction of the Century’ on 27 September 2005! We would definitely go for a ride, but only in summer, when the weather is nice...
