A death dating back more than a century
The body of a girl in a perfect state of preservation who had probably died more than a century ago was found in a metal box. She was most likely 2 years old at the time of her death, and this blonde little girl with pink cheeks and brand new clothes seemed to be sleeping a deep sleep in her sarcophagus, as if she would wake up at a moment’s notice.
Abandoned for decades, this coffin was clearly forgotten when the 30,000 graves were exhumed at Odd Fellows Cemetery and moved to the new Colma cemetery in 1920.
An identity rediscovered
Called ‘Miranda Eve’ at the time of her discovery, it took more than a year of research and investigation for experts and genealogists to discover the true identity of the young deceased. Her name was actually Edith Howard Cook, the daughter of a wealthy couple, who died October 13, 1876 as a result of a communicable disease. Professor Jelmer Eerkens of the University of California said:
Her immune system must have weakened, then she would have fallen into a coma before passing away
Laid to rest the following June at the Colma cemetery, this little girl now has a new gravestone, this time with her true identity inscribed upon it.
