On Sunday, January 20th, Masazo Nonaka died at the age of 113. This Japanese man held the title of ‘oldest man in the world.’ On April 10th, 2018, this man, born on July 25th, 1905, received his official Guinness World Records certificate at his residence in Hokkaido.

‘He was fine yesterday and he left us quietly,’ his granddaughter Yuko told Kyodo News, as reported by our colleagues at 20 Minutes. Masazo Nonaka lived with his family, who run a ryokan, a traditional inn with onsen, hot volcanic springs in which to relax. The Japanese man had five children, following his marriage in 1931.
Masazo Nonaka was not the first person of Japanese origin to have lived for a long time. In particular, he was preceded by Jiroemon Kimura, who died in June 2013 at the age of 116, and Sakari Momoi, who was 112 when he died in July 2015. For the moment, the longevity record awarded by Guinness is still held by Jeanne Calment, the French woman who died in 1997, aged 122 and 164 days.
