A race is on to save a five-year-old boy who has been trapped for three days inside a well. Rescuers in northern Morocco have been digging ceaselessly to save a young child who fell trapped at the bottom of a 32-metre-deep (105-foot) well after falling into it on Tuesday night.
Rescue operation
Response teams were able to use a rope to transfer him oxygen and water, but they were unable to reach him to bring him back to the surface. In the middle of this, the entire country has banded together to show their support for the boy on social media, with the hashtag #SaveRayan trending for hours across the country on Twitter. The boy’s mother Wassima Kharchich said,
I pray and beg God that he comes out of that well alive and safe. Please God, ease my pain and his, in that hole of dust.
According to Morocco's official MAP news agency, a CCTV camera has been sent down to keep an eye on him. Reportedly, rescuers employed five bulldozers to dig a parallel trench in an attempt to reach the boy on Thursday.
Long way to go
The trench has reached a depth of 19 metres so far. A volunteer from Red Crescent confirmed,
I managed to communicate with the child and ask if he could hear me. There was a response. I waited for a minute and saw that he began using the oxygen.
A helicopter is on standby to carry the boy to the nearest hospital, and medical personnel are on-site to care for him. Mustapha Baytas, a government spokesman, said the issue is being continuously monitored and that they are looking into numerous options for saving him.
