Clara Paulino, 56, was found dead in the back of her husband's police cruiser outside of their Miami Shores home in Florida. While she was locked in the car during a hot Miami afternoon, her husband, Aristides Paulino, was asleep in their home after coming back from an overnight shift.
During that afternoon, the temperatures outside climbed to 33 degrees celsius but the temperatures inside the car could have been more than twenty degrees hotter. According to some calculations, after a couple of hours, the temperatures inside the vehicle could have actually approached 60 degrees or more. This is due to a phenomenon known as the greenhouse effect.
According to the local authorities, Clara was searching for something in the back seat of the marked police SUV when the door managed close behind her and the self-locking mechanism kicked in. Unfortunately, her husband could not hear her cries for help and she did not have her cellphone with her to be able to call.
A neighbour, Daphne Stewart, told local news outlets that it was not uncommon to see Clara going in and out of her husband's police cruiser.
