This village, located in the province of Overjissel and close to the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, is nicknamed the "Venice of the North" (a nickname it shares with Bruges in Belgium) because of the waters that surround it. Giethoorn is a lake village, that is to say, it is found inside a lake.

A place of tranquility
This body of water was formed as a result of the peat extraction that took place there. The exploitation of peat consisted of extracting soil with this organic matter which, once dried, served as fuel. This exploitation degraded many wetlands which later became ponds. That's what happened to this village that is accessible only by foot, by bike or on board a small boat.
