The government scheme previously did not include takeaway orders as it was designed to get people back into restaurants to support the hospitality industry. So, the delivery service app Deliveroo has decided to launch its own discount scheme for September.

What is the discount?

In the Deliveroo deal, customers are entitled to £5 off their orders when their order is worth £20 or more. And, just like 'Eat Out to Help Out' the deal is running for the first three days of every week. That's every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the whole of September.

The deal is set to give cashback for the first 100,000 orders through small businesses. That means that National chains such as McDonald's,KFC, and Nando's will not be included unless they decide to foot the costs themselves. Deliveroo boss Will Shu stated:

Deliveroo is passionate about supporting local restaurants, who are central to our business and to so many high streets across the UK. Our restaurant partners play a vital role in our economy, just as they do people’s everyday lives, bringing people the food they love.

He continued:

We know they have been hit hard recently, and we hope Our Eat IN to Help Out scheme can play a part in helping their businesses through this difficult period.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak previously highlighted what an important role delivery services like Deliveroo had during the lockdown by helping restaurants stay in business through takeaways:

This has been an incredibly difficult time for the hospitality sector, both during the lockdown and emerging from it. Thousands of restaurants and cafes forced to close during lockdown were thankfully able to continue trading in some way using delivery services such as Deliveroo.

Around 16,000 small businesses will be taking part in the Deliveroo discounts and users will get a discount code to use during checkout. So, check out your local Deliveroo app to support your local restaurants!
