Having a threesome is one of men's most common fantasies, but threesomes can also be a great tool to help couples make up after one partner cheats on the other. At least that's what British sociologist Ryan Scoats' research, which he has detailed in his book Understanding Threesomes: Gender, Sex, and Consensual Non-Monogamy, suggests.

Are threesomes a necessary ingredient for a happy relationship?
Throughout his research on threesomes, this researcher from the University of Birmingham interviewed 200 volunteers who had already had one and discussed threesomes with 50 others, reports Glamour.
Based on his results, not only are more and more couples using threesomes to spice up their sex life, but many see it as a way to try new things 'safely.'
Compensation for cheating
Even more surprising, a significant number of testimonies collected by Ryan Scoats reveal that couples are using threesomes as a way for one partner to 'pay their debt' after cheating. One respondent, a married woman, cheated on her husband with a couple, and subsequently agreed to have another threesome, this time with her husband, to 'settle her infidelity debt' and give him an opportunity to sleep with someone else too.
Ryan Scoats wrote in an article about his research that was posted on the University of Birmingham's website:
As society becomes more liberal, more open to different sexual behaviours and relationships, the stigma around threesomes is gradually reducing, although many may not feel they can openly discuss their threesome experiences. I hope that my studies into consensual non-monogamy will help reduce the stigma further and help people to understand their own threesome experiences.
