Although our curiosity does drive us to explore all that surrounds us, we sometimes feel a little like we are in the centre of the Universe. Smaller than you think
Your boss made an unpleasant remark? You lost some followers on your Instagram account? Take a step back to avoid falling into depression or even navel gazing! How? By learning how to situate yourself. Thanks to this video you’ll see that our planet, Earth, occupies an area of 197 million miles² and that the UK occupies only 93,628 miles². And even if size does not matter, this fact reminds us that we are not alone on Earth, and even less so in the Universe.
Don’t forget the 8 planets
We revolve in a solar system composed of 8 planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune (from the nearest to the most distant from the sun). Do you have trouble keeping them in the right order? Use concatenation, a mnemonic device used by Sébastien Martinez, a French memory champion. He suggests several sentences, each word beginning with the first letter of a planet and in the right order. At Maxisciences, we like the following: ‘My Very Enthusiastic Mother Just Served Us Noodles.’ M-V-T-M-J-S-U-N Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Did you catch the trick?
To learn more about each of them and the rest of the universe, which reminds us that the earth is just a tiny speck of dust in a universe of which we do not yet know the limits, watch and listen to the video.
