A study published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapiesindicated that baths can help to reduce symptoms of depression, making it easier to live a happier life.
Researchers, funded by the University of Freiburg noted that more than 350 million people suffer from depression worldwide, but only a third of those people respond to medication in the form of antidepressants. This, they thought called for the investigation intonon-medicinal treatment.
The study was conducted over eight weeks, with 36 participants taking 40-degree baths and then being wrapped in warm blankets. The scientists discovered that submerging oneself in hot water reinforces the natural fluctuations of the circadian rhythm which is weaker in those with depression and helps to aid in better sleep.
Baths also help in the release of the feel-good hormone, serotonin. This chemical helps to regulate anxiety, happiness and mood, which will go a long into improving one's quality of life. Coupled with aerobic exercise, that black dog will have a hard time keeping up.
So maybe it's time to embrace a bath. You can even bring a beer, listen to a podcast or try out some bath bombs. The mere act of lying back and letting the heat take over could make your life just that little bit better.
