Bridge collapses in Mexico as metro train passes, at least 20 dead and counting

The tragedy took place near Olivos station, in the east of the Mexican capital. At least 20 people died and nearly 70 others were injured after an overhead walkway collapsed as a Mexico City underground train passed by on Monday night. The video surveillance images, broadcast by several local media, are making the rounds on social networks and other news channels.

The accident occurred at around 10:20pm (5:20am Greenwich time), on a bridge where the local metro line 12 runs. As shown in the CCTV footage broadcast by Milenio TV, which you can see below, the bridge collapsed at the exact moment a metro train passed over it and crashed into a road below where many cars were travelling.

According to the risk management and civil protection service of the Mexican capital, the death toll is currently 20 and nearly 70 injured. Thirty-four people have been transferred to hospitals for treatment following the tragedy.

The Mayor of Mexico City was there

After the tragedy, firefighters and medical rescue teams rushed to the scene to search for survivors.

For her part, the mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that she was at the scene of the tragedy, with the rescue teams, via her Twitter account, confirming several deaths.

In footage broadcast by local media outlet Periodico Zocalo, survivors can be seen digging themselves out of the rubble, cables and twisted metal to evacuate the collapsed trains. Rescue operations and treatment of victims are still ongoing. The authorities have issued messages on social networks calling on residents to avoid the area and allow rescue workers to pass through.
