Alarm raised as thousands of dead sea creatures wash up on UK beach

Thousands of sea creatures are washing up on coastlines in the northeast of England, horrifying locals who say they numbers are unprecedented. Tons of dead crabs, lobsters and other sea creatures were found, with some struggling to stay alive.

The discovery, along the beaches of Teesside, has amplified fears over the future of marine wildlife amid climate change concerns.

An investigation has been launched by the Environmental Agency to determine if pollution is to blame for this.

This development is coming on the heels of the government’s decision to allow companies to dump raw sewage into British waterways.

Huge numbers of marine animals - some dead - have also shown up along the beaches of Marske and Saltburn.

A resident of Marske, Sharon Bell, 48, has lived in the area for over two decades and usually takes long walks along the beach. She said she has never anything like this before.

I was utterly shocked and saddened to see in some parts, waist deep seaweed full of thousands of dead and alive crabs and lobsters, all kinds and species,I have never seen anything like this. Something is very, very wrong here.

Investigations Launched

According to local media, dead marine life have been washing up on various beaches in the region over the past couple of weeks, prompting scrutiny from the Environmental Agency. Its spokesperson told TeesideLive:

Samples of water, sediment, mussel and crab have been collected and are being sent to our labs for analysis, to consider whether a pollution incident could have contributed to the deaths of the animals. We have also shared samples with CEFAS Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture) labs for disease analysis.

In the meantime, the agency is asking the public to call them on 0800 807060 if they are aware of any pollution incidents that could be affecting wildlife.
